The Dominican Nuns were NOT on Oprah!

11 February 2010

But the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist were and we're told they did a great job! (Congratulations, Sisters!)

Our families and friends, and a plethora of junk emails from all sources have been telling us, "The Dominican Nuns were on Oprah". Of course, the word nun and sister are used interchangeably but when you're talking about Dominicans it can't be done! To say that the "Dominican Nuns were on Oprah," would be like saying, "The Franciscan Nuns were on Oprah" when you mean the Dominican Sisters of Mary!

The Dominican Nuns—Nuns of the Order of Preachers—are a distinct and separate religious Institute composed of hundreds of monasteries who, "promise obedience to the Master of the Order according to our Constitutions, and thus preserve the unity of the Order and of our profession which are dependent on our common obligation of obedience to one head." (Constitutions 17, II)

Who are the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist? Check out their mission statement.

Who are the Nuns of the Order of Preachers? You can read our Fundamental Constitutions which presents the essential foundation of our charism in the heart of the Order of Preachers by clicking on the tab above on the left that says, "Sequela Christi".

Hi Sisters - I was alerted to the Oprah segment by my mom, who wrote that it was the group to which the former pastoral associate at her parish belonged, which wasn't true at all - that sister was an Adrian Dominican. So this further highlights your discussion of differences between Dominican groups and how people get them confused!

Anyway, it was a really good segment which I think will do wonders to dispel some misconceptions about nuns and sisters, and to encourage young women to consider religious life. No one has more influence than Oprah!!

It was a good show. The sisters were a terrific example of what true religious. Thanks for the distinction sisters. My sister who was once in the convent, made sure we knew the difference between a nun and a sister.

yes always also drives me nuts too when the media, and Church Folks call Friars/Brothers "Monks"....oh well.. thats just the tip of the iceberg of ignorance..
yes it was well done considering edits , and Oprahs New Age affiliations being disciple of Eckhart Tolle and Uneversalism,,,....but Lisa Ling always does a balanced job.
here is a link to the whole show

More "cousins," yes? They did do a good job, especially the young ones who cdame across as very "real" in their comments about their lifestyle before their entrance to religious life.

Cloistered nuns have always been among my favorite people. To think that the likes of Oprah could possibly inspire someone to live the life "Hidden with Christ in God," is beyond repugnance;it is almost blasphemous.
May our Precious Lord preserve all you dear Sisters in His Love and Grace.
