FIRST PROFESSION OF SR JOSEPH MARIA, OP!

13 February 2010

Today is the feast of Bl. Jordan of Saxony, first sucessor of St. Dominic and patron of Dominican Vocations! What a wonderful day for the First Profession of our Sr. Joseph Maria of the Holy Family, OP!

Below are a few photos from the beautiful Mass and reception. It is very busy here but we'll try to share a few more photos later. Please pray for Sr. Joseph Maria and for many more to follow her in this total dedication to the praise of God!

Sr. Joseph Maria with her father. Her family flew from Texas last night arriving at 1AM! Her friends got stuck in an airport in Alabama and couldn't make it and had to turn back!

With her dad, sister and 2 of her brothers-in-law. Sr. Joseph Maria comes from a family of eight girls, all married.

Fr. Vincent de Lucia, OP was the main celebrant and gave a beautiful homily! He loves swinging the thurible!

I, Sr. Joseph Maria of the Holy Family, make profession and promise obedience to God and to blessed Mary and to blessed Dominic, and to the Master of the Order of Friars Preachers, and to you, Sr. Mary Martin de Porres of Jesus, prioress of this Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary, and to your sucessors, according to the Rule of blessed Augustine and the Constitutions of the Nuns of the Order of Preachers, that I will be obedient to you, and to your successors for three years.

Blessing of the scapular.

Receiving the black veil.

Sister is all smiles as she poses with her lovely
profession cake, baked and decorated by her
novice mistress.

I am grateful her family was able to get out of Texas - we had the most recorded snow EVER! And, trees down and 200,00 people without power. Congratulations to all of you.

Congratulations and blessings, Sister Joseph Maria! Abundant blessings on her family for their selfless "Yes, Lord!" in supporting her in responding generously to Christ's call. Congratulations to the Nuns of the Dominican Monastery of the Holy Rosary!! God's spirit is alive and well among you. And to Sister Mary Catherine, what a beautiful cake!! A true work of art, it reflects the tender care you give to the novices and temporary professed with whom you minister.

Fr. Dismas 7:02 PM

May the Lord, who has begun this good work in you, bring it to fruition! Congratulations and prayers!

Sister Joseph's profession brought tears to my eyes. And the novice mistress could have an alternative career as a baker! I will keep Sister in my prayers this week; congratulations to her.

Congratulations Sr. Joseph Maria! What a beautiful celebration (and beautiful cake)!

Do the Dominican nuns make vows of poverty and chastity, or are these assumed by the person as part of the vow of obedience? I know you are a very old Order and perhaps, like Benedictines, "predate" the development of poverty, chastity, and obedience as discrete religious vows?

Jane, if you noticed, the title of this entry was "First Profession" not "First Vows". Profession is to a way of life according to our constitutions which includes the 3 traditional vows. So, yes we make the 3 vows but we make profession to PERSONS to live this way of life.
This profession with very slight changes is the same one expressed by each Dominican nun for 800+ years!

As I said above, this is just wonderful! Be assured of my prayers for Sister Joseph Maria and all of you!

Love in Christ,

Candice
