Nuns of the Order of Preachers

Moniales Ordinis Praedicatorum

By their hidden life they proclaim prophetically that in Christ alone is true happiness to be found, here by grace and afterwards in glory.

The nuns of the Order of Preachers came into being when our holy Father Dominic gathered women converts to the Catholic faith in the monastery of Blessed Mary of Prouille. These women, free for God alone, he associated with his “holy preaching” by their prayer and penance.

What is a Dominican Nun?

Dominican Nuns are consecrated to God and live the mission of the Order of Preachers to preach the Gospel for the salvation of souls through a life of prayer, penance, hearing the Word of God and contemplating the mysteries of Salvation.

The Dominican Nuns were founded by Saint Dominic de Guzman in 1206. The mission of the Order of Preachers is to share with others the truth about the God whom we contemplate in our hearts. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Truth that sets us free and the Way by which everyone can receive the Life of God. It was out of love for God and mercy for others that Dominic founded us over 800 years ago as an Order of Preachers in the Catholic Church, so that the saving truth of the Gospel could be made better and more widely known.

Monasteries

As the Lord Jesus, the Savior of all, offered himself completely for our salvation, they consider themselves to be truly his members primarily when they are spending themselves totally for souls.

Called by God, like Mary, to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to his words (cf. Lk. 10:39) they are

converted to the Lord, withdrawing from the empty preoccupations and illusions of the world. In purity and humility of heart, in living and assiduous contemplation, they love Christ, who is close to the Father’s heart.
